Penycoed Riding Stables
Volunteer Stable Hand, Trainee Groom and Horse Trainer
2007 - July 2011
In 2007 I joined a local riding stables, however an hour lesson every week wasnt enough for me, so I volunteered most of my weekends and after school hours to helping take care of the horses in exchange for free lessons in riding, horse care and horse training. I found that I had a huge passion for working with horses and would bond with them very quickly.
Duties included - Mucking out, cleaning tack, cleaning the school, catching and putting out horses, grooming, feeding and watering, teaching young children and the disabled how to take care of their ponies, leading and ensuring the safety of riders, bandaging for transport, taking care of other animals and training horses that needed extra attention.
Achievements - I found that I could bond with horses very quickly and easily so I was often put in charge of the more troublesome horses, due to my fearless nature I was often taking on horses with problems and took many falls during these sessions. My proudest accomplishment is when I was put in charge of a chestnut pony named Clint, he refused to jump straight, often bucking off his riders while throwing himself over jumps. After just a few sessions with him I had him jumping normally and he was then allowed to join in with the childrens pony morning.
I was also given the laziest appaloosa horse named Baker, riders struggled to get him to do anything at all including me at first, but after a few weeks of riding him, I managed to convince him to pick up his pace, after that he was my choice competiton horse, I practised all my grooming and bandaging with him purely because he was the most challenging of horses. I don't like to take the easy route when it comes to learning.

Often I was left in charge to manage the bar alone, often watching over two other members of staff and ensuring everything is running as smooth as possible.

Providing care for the disabled and elderly in their own homes, it required create a strong bond of trust with each client, preparing meals, cleaning and tidying home, personal care and companionship including going out of my way and above and beyond expectations to meet the clients needs (doing their shopping when you do your own, picking up bits from the shop in your own time etc). Handling clients money, aiding with medication consumption and being trained in first aid and cpr.
